LEED Project Experience
Maine Drilling & Blasting has been sought out for our industry expertise in the completion of various construction projects where LEED certification is integral. Our engineers work with site owners, developers, construction managers and general contractors to ensure that all parameters involved in the role we play are in compliance from day one.
Brandeis University Carl J. Shapiro Science Center
Waltham, MA
SCOPE OF WORK:
Ambitious two-phase plan combined renovation, new construction and demolition to create ~137,000 sf of new research, teaching and instrumentation space within a 558,000-sf building complex. MD&B was involved in blasting rock for the foundation and site improvements of the new structure
CHALLENGE:
The project occurred while University classes were in session.
OUTCOME:
The team met the challenge of the first phase of this project by November 2006.
SCHEDULE:
All drilling & blasting was accomplished (on-schedule in 3 months).
GREEN ELEMENTS:
All capital projects at Brandeis are designed and built to a LEED-Silver-equivalent or better standard. Building materials included cladding with recycled content, natural linoleum, recycled stone flooring, sustainable solid-surface material, urea-formaldehyde free wood products, low VOC paints, and carpet made with recycled fibers. Sustainability strategies included heat recovery with enthalpy wheel; high-performance glazing and sunshading; a green roof; a daylight harvesting system; and replacement of previously impervious paving with landscaping to reduce stormwater runoff.
